I am proud and honored (actually - I am delighted!) to announce that...
I WON the Lucerne Festival / Ensemble XII Composition Competition!

A new work for 12 percussionists (Ensemble XII) has been commissioned for this occasion and it will have its World Premiere in the scope of Lucerne Festival in September 2013.

Concert Review Lucerne Festival Sept 1st 2013, Late Night 2
After getting introduced to Ensemble XII and the composer Milica Djordjevic in the free Lucerne Festival 40min series of presentations I attended an Ensemble XII concert for the first time. Here are my personal impressions as listener and non musician:

Thomas Meadowcroft Home organs for 6 percussionists
More like a performance than a classical peace of music, reminded me to the modern art often displayed upstairs in the art museum, you look at an installation and wonder what it is

Fritz Hauser As we are speaking for 4 percussionists
closed my eyes to hear what it is, in one part heard like rain drops falling on a roof and water flowing off

Rick Burkhardt Simulcast for 2 speaking percussionists
same like Meadowcroft, should I follow the story line, but leads nowhere

the first three performances are in a way like modern art installations transferred from the visual to the audible, but the following is an extraordinary new experience

Milica Djordjevic Zapis for 12 percussionists (world premiere)
the audience is surrounded by percussionists with three being positioned upstairs behind the audience (one in each corner, one in the middle), one on each side and seven on the main stage; great performance, 30 minutes long?, time flies; the development of the themes and the complexity of the structure have the quality of a symphony; while classically a theme is a melody, here it is a pattern of beats or the like that is varied, transferred, repeated and due to the positioning of the percussionists even rotated; leads to a completely new hearing experience (revolutionary?) and the energy of the percussion instruments penetrate the whole body; may also appeal to a non classical audience; like to hear it again to get a deeper understanding
